Plumes in stellar convection zones

All numerical simulations of compressible convection reveal the presence of strong downwards directed flows. Thanks to helioseismology, such plumes have now been detected also at the top of the solar convection zone, on supergranular scales. Their properties may be crudely described by adopting Taylor’s turbulent entrainment hypothesis, whose validity is well established under various condition...

Nonlinear Pulsations of Convective Stellar Models

We review the numerical modelling of the nonlinear pulsations of classical variable stars with hydrocodes that include the effects of turbulent convection. Despite their simplicity these turbulent convective recipes appear to remove many of the difficulties that radiative codes faced. In particular, the numerical modelling of double mode pulsations has become possible.

Beyond the Bench: Hunting Down Fugitive Literature

Background: When multiple endpoints are of interest in evidence synthesis, a multivariate meta-analysis can jointly synthesise those endpoints and utilise their correlation. A multivariate random-effects metaanalysis must incorporate and estimate the between-study correlation (ρB). Methods: In this paper we assess maximum likelihood estimation of a general normal model and a generalised model f...

Convective intensification of magnetic flux tubes in stellar photospheres

The convective collapse of thin magnetic flux tubes in the photospheres of sun-like stars is investigated using realistic models of the superadiabatic upper convection zone layers of these stars. The strengths of convectively stable flux tubes are computed as a function of surface gravity and effective temperature. We find that while stars with Teff ≥ 5500 K and log g≥ 4.0 show flux tubes highl...
